Inspector General Speaks to LBC

Our speaker on August 19th was Sheryl Steckler, Inspector General of the office of the Inspector General for Palm Beach County. We thought it was apropos to begin the LBC breakfast with an overview of the Law of Solid Ground from John Maxwell’s international best seller The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership.

Greg Gorman, one of my associates from the John Maxwell Team  taught that the foundation of all leadership is Trust, the Law of Solid Ground. It’s interesting that we teach the #1 Question that followers ask their leaders is ‘Can I trust you?’

When trust is lost, one loses the ability to lead and government loses the ability to govern.

The office of Inspector General was created several years ago in response to the rash of arrests and convictions of Palm Beach County Commissioners. Palm Beach County was rapidly losing its reputation as an honest place to do business.  Enter Sheryl Steckler.  She is a breath of fresh air. She walks the talk.

Her presentation was both enlightening and inspirational.  Inspirational in the sense that she created the hope that something can be done to stop the corruption in Palm Beach County government.

At great personal sacrifice, she chose to take the IG position. She went to Twin Lakes HS, Palm Beach Junior College and graduated from FSU. She came back to her home town to make a difference even though she left her teenage daughters and husband back in Tallahassee.  She commutes on weekends.

Her department has already saved hundreds of thousands of dollars in fraud and stolen supplies from the county.  She is a person of strong ethics. She wouldn’t accept the free breakfast. She even refused the complimentary book of inspirational quotes that we give to every speaker.

Palm Beach County is truly blessed to have Sheryl Steckler looking out for us.

Dr. Bill Eickhoff, Founding Member of the John Maxwell Team and VP of the Leadership Business Council.
